About IAP2 Canada
The International Association for Public Participation (IAP2) Canada is a national not-for-profit organization committed to advancing and advocating for best practices in public participation. We equip individuals, organizations, and communities across the country with the tools, knowledge, and frameworks to engage meaningfully in decisions that impact them. Through training, networking, certification, and research, we help build a more inclusive and democratic society.
The Role
We are seeking experienced and passionate individuals to join our Board of Directors to help guide IAP2 Canada in its continued growth and impact. As a Board Member, you will play a critical role in shaping the strategic direction, ensuring financial health and legal compliance, and contributing to the governance that supports our mission and values.
Key Responsibilities

Actively participate in monthly board meetings (virtual and/or in-person)

Contribute to strategic planning and organizational oversight

Serve on at least one board committee or working group

Act as an ambassador for IAP2 and uphold the organization’s core values

Provide oversight for financial performance, risk management, and legal compliance
-
Support the Executive Director and staff by providing expertise, insight, and guidance
-
Ensure accountability and transparency in all governance practices
Ideal Skillset and Experience
We are especially seeking individuals with experience in one or more of the following areas:

Finance: accounting, financial oversight, budgeting, investment strategy
-
Legal: nonprofit law, contracts, risk management, compliance

Governance: board leadership, policy development, bylaws, and nonprofit operations

Program development and training expertise
In addition, candidates will ideally demonstrate:

Previous board or committee experience (preferably within nonprofit or mission-driven organizations)

Strategic thinking and sound judgment
-
A collaborative spirit and commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion
-
A strong interest in public participation, community engagement, or civic processes
Qualifications
-
Minimum 5 years of professional experience in a relevant field
-
Commitment to approximately 5–10 hours per month for meetings, prep, and committee work

Comfort working in a virtual environment with digital communication tools
Membership Requirement
